Help & Info about Octodad for windows

  • Is Octodad free or is this the paid version?

This is the full and free version. The developers have never charged for this version of the game. It is not a part of the game, nor will the free licence expire.
  • Why have the makers never charged for this game?

The development team is only very small, and they made most of this game in college and only finished and published it just before they left. Since they didn't spend any money making it, and since they had to do most of the work for their college course, they figured they could give it away free. Plus, the free version helped them get money from Kickstarter to help make the second version of Octodad called “The Dadliest Catch.”
  • Is this game still supported?

The development team still exist, and even though they do not actively update the game, they will listen to bug reports and maybe offer advice on how to fix them if you have them. Some of the bugs are systematic and are unable to be fixed.
  • Why do I need 3GB of RAM for such an old game?

The game actually doesn't need that much RAM most of the time. In fact, the game plays quite well on computers with less than 3GB of RAM, but unexpected freezes and crashes are far less likely if you have 3GB or more of RAM.
  • Do I need this version in order to play the Dadliest Catch version?

The second game called, “Octodad Dadliest Catch” is not a sequel. The developers simply built on what they learned with the first game and created a new one. The only advantage that the original Octodad players have is that they are better at handling the octopus when playing the second game because they have had more practice.
  • Why does it feel like I am driving a vehicle rather than moving a character?

The whole point of the game was to have an octopus try to pass itself off as a human, and the way they did that was to treat the character like a difficult-to-drive helicopter mixed with hovercraft.
  • Will the old gaming engine still work on my computer?

The engine was first created years ago, but it has been updated many times and should still be fine with your computer. The open-source rendering engine is called Irrlicht, and the physics engine is called PhysX. The audio engine is FMOD.
  • Is there 3rd party controller support?

The game was not created with controller support in mind, but since many of the controls are mouse-based, some people have been able to set up their controllers so that their controller work with this game.
  • Can I leave Octodad’s house?

You are unable to leave the house in this version. In the second game, you are allowed to leave the house.
  • Why do I suddenly drop things when trying to move through rooms?

It is a bug in the game where the system sometimes ignores the fact that you have your finger pressed on the mouse button. There is no fix or patch for this bug as it was viewed as an advantage since it made the game more difficult/challenging.
